The Origin of Concepts Productions Part 1

Greetings visitors of Concepts Productions DOT com! I decided to create a blog for the website so that individuals can further understand not origin of Concepts of Concepts Productions but to also understand my motivation behind the company and why it means so much to me. Hopefully I will be able to update this blog every few weeks. Be sure to subscribe to it so that you will be notified every time updates are uploaded... Sound fair? With that being said, I welcome everyone to read my very first entry.

People ask me all the time why and how Concepts was created. The name "Concepts" was loosely inspired by a good friend/fraternity brother from Denver named Chris. Chris was a poet that would spit his gift to ANYONE and EVERYONE that would listen. I'm not even going to lie to you... I HATED IT because I was not a fan of poetry at the time. This was way back in 2000 when I thought that men who wrote poetry were a bunch of MOIST softies that were influenced by the movie Love Jones that used poetry as a way to get women. Either that or they were a bunch of men that were so in touch with their feminine side that you didn't know that they were really attracted to women. I know that sounds harsh but I'm just telling you how I felt at the time. Anyways back to Chris. When he performed at dimly lit coffee shops in Denver, he used the stage name of Chris Concepts. It wasn't until after he tortured me with his poetry for about a year that I realized how brilliant he was. He literally changed my life. You see, having an open mind provided me with the opportunity to realize that not only was I friends with a dang near genius, but he really had some GREAT things to say. It was then that I also realized that all poets weren't moist. (Moist = Soft and mushy like wet toilet paper...) He would always say, "Say Doowop, you need to write SON!" I would politely tell him that I respected his work but asking me to write was just plain crazy. I mean really. Just cause I respected his art didn't mean that I wanted to be like him. Little did I know what the future held.

It wasn't until February 2001 that I ended up writing my first poem. I remember it like it was yesterday. Most people seem to think that when men write poetry, the topic is generally about sex, (I want to lick you up and down and...) activism, (Lets go back to AfriKa because the white man....) etc. My first joint wasn't about any of the above. My first poem was entitled "TKO" and it was about how my girlfriend at the time managed to deliver a knock-out blow to my self esteem, passion, dreams, and heart. It was written on a Greyhound bus as I was traveling back to Oklahoma from Denver. The halfway point was Amarillo Texas and that is where I was able to read my poem for the first time in sufficient lighting. The funny thing about the whole poem situation is that for the first two years of writing/performing poetry, I was still in denial about being "a poet". I would say things like, "I don't write poems... I write Concepts... Poets are moist!" There is a ton of more info about the story of my first poem so if you want to hear more, stop me in the streets and ask me or simply email me... jwiggins@conceptsproductions.com

Due to time constraints, I will end my first blog now but please stay tuned for "The Origin of Concepts Productions Part II!
